The 22-year-old Kansas native has a story to tell.

Bailey Hulce is a McPherson College senior Communication major with a minor in Storytelling. From a self-described “hopeful” and “naive” incoming freshman to a prepared and responsible adult, her journey through McPherson College curriculum was a journey of transformation.

Hulce has always seen herself following in her family’s footsteps through the halls of McPherson College. Her family valued the importance of learning over the stress of getting good grades in school. “My family didn’t stress about my grades,” she details, emphasizing her family’s focus on understanding before immediate results. Her upbringing instilled a trait of curiosity or “thirst for knowledge” as Bailey described, that has made her who she is now. Her innate curiosity has expanded during her years in college. Her growth during her time at MC reflects that she has gained a broader understanding of the world around her. Her education has stretched far beyond textbooks and lecture. It has led her into a deeper understanding of the little complexities of life itself.

The college opened doors of community and opportunity for Bailey through her years in the theater department and being a part of the cheer team. “I’ve always known that I loved costume making from 4H,” Bailey explained, leading back to her upbringing and high school experiences. Her community in the theater department allowed her to express her creativity and find a home. Being on the college cheer team gave her a far better experience in comparison to her high school cheerleading team. She found a place where she belonged and could build lifelong relationships with her teammates. Her positive experience with the cheer team in comparison to her less fulfilling high school experience really highlights the importance of getting yourself out of your comfort zone and building those deep connections.

Her college experience has not been without its challenges. In an effort to fill her language class requirement, Bailey was faced with multiple choices she had to make. The struggle to find a French class left her frustrated and lost. “It was a mess and I did not appreciate how I was treated during it,” she describes, highlighting the need for student advocacy and representation. Hulce felt as though her needs were overlooked. She tried tirelessly throughout her first few years of college to meet her language requirement with a French class. She was assured that it would get handled so she could graduate. However, she was left scrambling her senior year. Taking a Spanish class was her only option, unless she was willing to pay her own money to take a French class for credit online. This felt unfair, since she pushed to have this done many times before it was too late. She felt that the staff at MC did not want to work with her to meet her needs and personal goals.

Ck4KTFNuYXBjaGF0LzEzLjM0LjAuNTIgKFNNLVM5MDhVOyBBbmRyb2lkIDE0I1M5MDhVU1FTOEVZQzEjMzQ7IGd6aXApIFYvTVVTSFJPT00=

Despite challenges and hurdles she had to face during her time at MC, Bailey found herself growing into a new version of herself. Bailey’s initial “undecided” status within the college quickly turned into a passion for Communication following a class on campus. “I took Becki’s class and I was like, ‘Mwahaha I will be a comm major!’” she laughed, praising Communication professor Becki Bowman. She gives credit to Becki Bowman for her choice of major and doesn’t regret her decision one bit. Bailey has built a close relationship with Becki as well as other professors on campus. She credits these relationships for creating some comfort within the college.

When asked for advice for any incoming students, Bailey’s simple response is, “Don’t be stupid.” She drilled in the importance of making smart choices and prioritizing personal safety in a sometimes-unsafe world. Bailey has never been the “party” type. She prefers to spend time at home and spend time with her closest friends. She thinks back to the time she has spent around others who may have been “irresponsible” and encourages newcomers to stay level-headed and refrain from the temptation to act a little too grown up.

Bailey no longer allows others to “walk all over her” in her life. After a long period of low self-esteem and not really knowing who she was as a person, being in college has changed her. She feels like she knows who she is now. She is sure of herself, assertive, and confident. Bailey noted that her values and beliefs have stayed the same, yet they have solidified. Being in college has been a process of personal reflection for her and she has gained clarity in her own principles.

Looking back on her time at MC, Bailey sees a clear path of change. Her eager to learn, sometimes naive, freshman self has been left in the past. She has blossomed into a responsible adult equipped with life skills gained from her years of trials and tribulations. From learning how to change her own oil in her car, to navigating complex situations, Bailey’s MC journey has given her the skills to excel in her professional career and reach her personal goals.

By Amanda Nagy Meet Bailey Hulce- a second-generation legacy student with a passion for design and costume making.
